Disabling passthrough authentication on Citrix PNagent

Occasionally as an administrator, you want to be able to log onto via our Citrix PNAgent with different credentials for testing. Depending on your farm setup, pass-through authentication is most likely enabled, and hence your client will be the same. To disable this on your workstation.

1. Open the registry and browse to: HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\NetworkProvider\HwOrder
2. Open ProviderOrder string, delete the entry PnSson
3. Now browse to HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\NetworkProvider\Order and delete the entry PnSson
4. Reboot

What happens when you put a TS/Citrix server into install mode

When installing applications on multiuser environment such as a Terminal/Citrix server, you must put the server into install mode, either via the command prompt or using Add/Remove programs in Control Panel.

To put the server into install mode using command prompt type: change user /install
To put server back to execute mode after you’ve finished installing the app, type: change user /execute

When you install the application in Install mode, and information normally written to the HKEY_CURRENT_USER key will be written to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Terminal Server\Install

This key is then copied back to HKEY_CURRENT_USER when the user logs on to the Terminal/Citrix Server.

Symantec Endpoint Protection and Citrix

Installing SEP v11 maintenance release 2 or earlier, on a Citrix server could bring it to a grinding hault when users start logging onto the Citrix server. You will notice multiple instances of smcgui.exe and ccapp.exe in the task manager -> processes.

Note: That this issue was resolve with SEP v11 MR3

To resolve this problem you need to perform the follow registry optimisations:

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection\SMC\LaunchSmcGui = 0

Locate the ccApp entry in the following registry key and delete it :

For 32 bit OS :-
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

For 64 bit OS :-
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Best Practices for Installing Citrix XenApp Rollup Packs

Force uninstall of Citrix

I ran into a problem where I was trying to uninstall XenApp5 from my Windows 2008 server. The uninstall process initially gather’s information about the application installed, and then an error message pops up and kicks off your RDP session, or it simply can’t uninstall XenApp

To force the uninstall of XenApp, see the following article on Citrix website http://support.citrix.com/article/CTX746354

Essentially you need to open command prompt, browse to the directory where your source mps.msi file is. I copied the source CD to the server so it’s C:\Installs\XA50_WS2008_EN\XenApp Server\w2k8 then type the command:

msiexec /x mps.msi /L*v c:\output.log CTX_MF_FORCE_SUBSYSTEM_UNINSTALL=Yes

Apple AirPrint via iPads & iPhones

Airprint is a new feature part of Apple’s IOS 4.2.1 that allows you to print from your IOS device to an airprint compatible printer (see list below).

For an IOS device to be able to print to this printer via Airprint, the printer and the IOS device needs to be connected to the same WiFi network. Printing from PC and MAC seems to work easily for me, but printing from the iPad caused problems when I tried to print, and select a printer, no printer was found.

At work we had a Cisco wireless network, and eventually to get it to work we had to enable a feature called “Multi-Cast Forward” on the wireless router.  All 3 of our printers were now discoverable and we can print via Airprint.
